The Flight series has propelled itself to the forefront of the graphic novel industry, garnering award nominations, creating great buzz at BEA, Comic-Con and other like-minded conventions, and generally striking a fresh note among jaded comics readers.
Kazu Kibuishi was 24 years old and working full-time in the animation industry when he began developing the idea of doing Flight. "I had wanted to see a publication of short comic stories featuring fun, inspiring material for some time, and I was hard pressed to find that kind of material on the shelf," he explains. He had read about how master animator/filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki worked on his masterpiece, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, in his free time after hours while directing some of his most popular films in the eighties and early nineties. So Kazu decided to try something similar. He began contacting his friends in the animation, comics, and graphic novel world to see if they would want to join the project. Little did he know that it would suck him into comics full-time. He now works from his home studio in Pasadena, California, creating and promoting Flight and his popular young adult comic Daisy Kutter, which was nominated as an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults -- the only graphic novel on the list in 2005.
